November 2016

Bhubaneswar, November 25th 2016: Shanta Memorial Rehabilitation Centre organized a Signature Campaign to observe the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women. Women with disabilities have in general been silenced within society, denied their rights and equal economic and social opportunities due to prejudice, stigma and poverty. Low literacy, lower income and rare control of resources make them disadvantaged in the field of education, employment and health. A continuous violence perpetuated on them contributes to their vulnerability. Students of BJB College and NISWASS participated in the program and supported the campaign to End Violence against Women with Disabilities. Various civil society members also pledged for the cause. This day is also known as “Orange Day”.  So to express their solidarity participants wore orange ribbon and wrote their messages on orange boards. They were holding pla cards and pledge cards which had messages to end violence against women with disabilities. Swarnalata, a student of BJB College said, “I am glad I came here. Such programs help to create awareness on the issue. We must stand for the rights of women with disabilities.” The signature campaign started at 10 am and went until 12 pm at Lower PMG.
